Girl Scout Horse Lovers and Wanna Be Princesses

Calling all volunteers

to the Tournament of the Phoenix

A unique opportunity-

Like the Olympics, the tournament brings participants from all over the world together in teamwork and cooperation, and fosters international good will.

It is one of a kind opportunity for kids to participate in an event on both a local and international scale.

Adults, seniors, members of the military – anyone with a few hours to spare- can assist in a non-commercial, locally run event that is good for the community, local businesses and families.

Please help us bring this unique and important event to Poway!

The knights need YOU!

On October 26, 27 & 28 2012 the Poway Rodeo Grounds will be transformed into a scene from ‘A Knight’s Tale’ as armoured knights from the US, England, Canada and France compete to win the prestigious Phoenix prize.

In addition to world class international competition for adults, the event is one of the only G rated medieval themed events in Southern California. Games, crafts, music, storytelling and archery, we have loads of creative, engaging activities especially for kids and families.

The event is produced by a small Ramona family business. To maintain control over the content and keep it family friendly, we do not accept sponsorships from large corporations. The event depends on grassroots support from the community to keep it -for- the community. This is a huge event with many facets, and we can’t do it without you!

How you can help

Pre-event prep- folding T shirts, stuffing envelopes, tagging merchandise, distributing flyers, etc. There are loads of jobs which are great for anyone who doesn’t want to work the weekend of the event, but still wants to help.

Site setup- Wednesday, October 24 and Thursday, October 25 at PVRA. Another great option for anyone who wants to help, but not on the weekend of the event.

Administrative (non-horse) tasks at the event- Ticket sales, security, parking, usher, kids crafts and games, running the Bouncy Castle, working in sales booths, etc. These jobs available at the event, usually 2-4 hours shifts.

Horse related jobs- bathing, grooming, dressing, feeding, meet and greet with the public. Sorry, but these jobs are open only to people with horse experience. Horse jobs are available both before and during the event.

Groups- The Tournament of the Phoenix is the perfect event for your Scout troop, school, church or youth group to earn Community Service hours! Whatever your age, whatever your ability, we welcome your help.

Signing up

It is helpful for us to have some jobs lined up in advance, but also to have volunteers who are willing to do any job on the spur of the moment at the event. Please let us know how many hours you’d like to work, whether you’d like to work before or during the event, and if you’d like to do a specific job. If you have a special skill you’d like to donate (web work, marketing, advertising, etc.) please let us know!

Please contact Gwen for more details or to sign up to be a volunteer.

Thanks for your help!

We appreciate your help, and offer free event tickets in exchange for your time. Work a morning shift and enjoy the afternoon at the event with a friend. Work one day and come back the second day for free! Please contact Gwen for more details or to sign up to be a volunteer.

About the event

The Tournament of the Phoenix is an international competition hosting athletes from the US, England, Canada, and France. The competitors will be competing in six events over the course of the two day tournament. This is not dinner show, but actual competition! This event brings the world’s best athletes to compete for glory in jousting’s most prestigious event!!

The event also showcases the “Festival of History”, where over 100 members of the southwest’s premier Living History associations will present a living timeline of history spanning Rome through the European Renaissance. Bagpipe and drum band Viadeyra will bring their own brand of ‘medieval rock & roll’ to the event as they perform live sets throughout the day. Games and activities for all ages, vendors offering a range of goods and food assure a day full of fun for event goers.
