Our New Girl Scout Year Begins!

Hello Sunnytrails leaders and a very warm welcome back from your Service Unit Team. We hope you and your girls are excited for the upcoming year of Girl Scouts as we continue to celebrate our 100th anniversary. Our Service Unit has some fantastic events planned for the year.
We’d like to invite you to our first Service Unit Meeting of the year next Thursday, August 16th at 7 pm at the Elks Lodge off of Telegraph Canyon Road. At these meetings we talk about upcoming events (like Coastal Cleanup Day and Camp Surf), plans for the Service Unit (SU), and Girl Scout news from our Council. Please try to have one leader from your troop attend. If you have any items to add to our agenda, please contact Angie Lutz, managerDBr@gssunnytrails.com.

Our Service Unit Meetings are typically held the 3rd Thursday of each month during the school year. We do not meet in December. In March 2013, we will meet one week early on 3/14/13 due to spring break. You can find the dates of all upcoming meetings on our online calendar at: https://www.gssunnytrails.com/calendar-2/

Registration
As you’re starting your troop meetings for the school year, please take a moment to check to make sure your girls are registered for the 2012-13 Girl Scout year. The main leader, or 01, of your troop can log in to the online registration system (www.sdgirlscouts.org/register) and use Troop Management to verify that the girls are registered. Many of you re-registered your girls last spring using the online system. If you did not re-register your girls yet, please be sure to do in advance of the September 30th deadline. If you have any questions about registrations, contact SU Registrar Dawn Garrigus at: registration@gssunnytrails.com.

Financials
Just a reminder that your troop financial reports were due in May. If you have not yet turned them in, please complete them as soon as possible. Troops that do not turn in financial reports will not be eligible to participate in any money earning projects, the fall encampment, or fall product sales. You may take your financials directly to our Treasurer Beth Ann Coleman’s home or you can bring them to the Service Unit Meeting on Thursday evening. For more information on financials, including Beth Ann’s address, go to: www.gssunnytrails.com/financial

Money Earning Projects
If your girls (Brownies and older) will be doing any money earning projects in addition to product sales this year, you will need to submit a money earning project application to your manager for approval at least 4 – 6 weeks in advance of your project. The managers and SU team meet one hour before each scheduled Service Unit Meeting, and we will review and approve any money earning projects at that time. You can email a copy of your application to your manager (see below) or drop off a copy at the Elks Club by 6 pm on the night of the Service Unit meeting. For more information on money earning projects, please go to: www.gssunnytrails.com/financial and scroll down to “Money Earning Projects”. Deb Lechner has posted a link to a very handy guide that will help you through the process. Be sure to read the guidelines on the application carefully as troops are limited in the number of money earning projects they can complete each year.

Camp Surf
Now that you’ve gotten the troop back together and you are registering for the new year – Come join us for a fabulous fall encampment at Camp Surf in Imperial Beach the weekend of October 28 – 28; it’s not too late, we still have room! Make a fun art project like candles in the sand, fall asleep listening to the waves on the beach, learn to surf and much more!

3rd grade Brownies and up, maximum 300 spots – $112/person, Includes a wetsuit – surfing, bodyboarding, archery, rock climbing wall, arts & crafts, eco-activities: recycling, alternative energy, composting, water conservation, and biodiversity activities that are a part of the It’s Your Planet Love It! Journeys.

50% DEPOSIT GUARANTEES YOUR SPOT. Collecting checks starting now till full. Send the attached registration sheet and make check out to “Sunnytrails”. Send it to Consuelo Murillo, 2062 Mirror Lake Place, Chula Vista, CA 91913. The remainder of the fee is due at our mandatory encampment meeting on September 20th at 8 pm at the Elks Lodge, immediately following the September Service Unit Meeting.
