I saw this article in PhotoJoJo.com and wanted to share it with you. It’s got some great ideas for older girls who are working on photography or who enjoy photography and are looking for a take action project.

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s you, with your camera!

Photography is your super power, so why not use it for good?

Turns out there are tons of amazing organizations that need your amazing photo skills! Read about three of our faves, then get to helping.

HEART GALLERY OF AMERICA

beforeYou can bring a smile to a child’s face, and having them say “cheese” is just step one.

The Heart Gallery of America is an organization through which photographers meet and photograph foster children with the goal of helping them find their forever families.

Heart Galleries are set up across the country (there’s probably one near you!) and will make all of the arrangements for your photo sessions. Afterwards they’ll display your photos in public locations to further the chances of the children being adopted. Now there’s a reason to smile!

PORTRAITS OF LOVE

beforeWhen you’re far from your loved ones, a memorable photo can make them feel so much closer. Few people know this better than military families.

Through Portraits of Love, volunteer photographers take group portraits for soldiers and their loved ones to be cherished overseas and back home.

Register and your name will be added to a database so families can contact you to arrange a shoot. Your photos will be uploaded to Shutterfly, who will print and send the photos to the families (all for free)

Hurry! Registration ends October 17, 2014.

SECOND CHANCE PHOTOS

beforeOur furry friends at animal shelters greatly benefit from professional-quality photos of their adorable faces.

Second Chance Photo’s mission is to save pets through photography. It’s been proven that better photos of pretty kitties and canines means a better chance of being adopted!

It’s as easy as finding a shelter near you and offering them your services. One Picture Saves (part of Second Chance Photo) even has a list of shelters you can check out.

TAKING IT FURTHER

  • Reach out to locally-owned businesses. Contact a small mom and pop restaurant and see if they’d like new photos taken of their menu items.
  • Snap some shots at farmer’s markets. Ask vendors if they’d like some quality photos to be used on their social media sites.
  • Smell (and photograph) the flowers at community gardens.Give the photos to the organizers of the gardens to be used on their websites or in brochures.
