Documentaries for Girls that might start larger discussions and perhaps spark an interest in traveling (these documentaries were recommended by my grown-up girl scouts. Please watch them first to make sure they’re appropriate for your girls:

Becoming (Netflix)— Michelle Obama’s book tour, exploring her experience as a Black woman in America, lawyer, wife, mother, and First Lady.

Period. End of Sentence (Netflix)— discusses the taboo/understanding of/access to menstrual health and products in India, and how being a woman in that society affects their schooling and professional lives.

Dream Big: Engineering Our World (Netflix)— an inspiring documentary to start a conversation about how engineering is an integral part of our world and future, and how it can be used to address world issues and disparities 

Living On One Dollar (YouTube, Amazon Prime Video) [rated TV-14 according to YouTube] — documentary about 4 college students that go to Peña Blanca, Guatemala and budget to live off </= $1 per day, the reality for many families there.

Chasing Coral (Netflix) — documentary about the changes happening to the world’s coral reefs, discusses global warming and conservationism, interconnectedness of ecosystems 

Fed Up (YouTube, Amazon Prime Video) [rated PG] — explores the topic of childhood obesity mainly in America but also globally and the multiple factors that contribute to this issue including media advertising, government, school meals, exercise, and changes that can be made by people at many levels including kids! Encourages more conscious consumption of media and foods, and making healthier choices. (Does show video clip of Girl Scouts selling cookies while discussing the need to reduce intake of these types of foods)

Ladies First (Netflix) [TV-G] —documentary about Deepika Kumari professional Indian archer, challenging gender roles in India, specifically in professional sports. Discusses rising from failure and adversity.
